Ragdoll Colors & Patterns

Ragdolls are called "pointed" cats. The points on the Ragdoll are the ears, face, legs and tail. These points are darker then the overall body color. Registerable Ragdolls come in several new colors and patterns. No matter what color or pattern, the Ragdoll is still a blue-eyed pointed breed.

Ragdoll Colors

SEAL - dark brown points with fawn colored body.

BLUE - dark grayish blue points with light gray body.

CHOCOLATE - medium brown points with ivory body.

LILAC - light pinkish gray points with light ivory body.

RED - bright apricot to deep red points with very white body coat.

CREAM - pale buff cream to pinkish cream points with very white body.

TORTIE - variably mottled with red and/or cream points with fawn to cream body coat

Ragdoll Patterns

Ragdolls present in three traditional patterns, with Lynx as a possible fourth "pattern on a pattern."

COLORPOINT - The points (legs, tail, ears and face) are one of the four colors, while the rest of the body is a lighter color. There should be no white markings with this pattern anywhere on the cat.

MITTED - The points, except for the paws, are one of the four colors. The front paws are white (called "mittens") and the back legs are white up to the hocks (creating "boots" on the back legs). They should also have a white chin, chest, and stomach. We have also successfully bred what is known as the "mitted with a blaze," which is also part of the accepted mitted pattern for the Ragdoll. It is, however, preferable that the blaze NOT interrupt the pigment of the nose leather. These cats are accepted and can be registered for showing under the class of "Mitted" in TICA and ACFA.

BICOLOR - The face, ears and tail are one of the four colors. There is a white inverted "V" that runs from between the ears and preferably through the center of the cat's eyes to just below them, or even to extend as low as the cat's chin. The nose leather should be pink and the chin should be white. The legs, feet, chest and stomach should also be white. This pattern is the only accepted pattern for showing in CFA.

LYNX - The lynxing pattern is nothing more than tabby cat markings on a color pointed cat. In many countries, they are often known as "tabby points." The pointed areas of the cat will display distinct barring (or tabby markings) that is separated by lighter background color. The Lynx markings appear with ANY of the above three patterns and in all colors. If a Ragdoll female has Tortie coloring as well as Lynx markings, she will be identified as a "Torbie."

NOTE: The patterns described above are the ideal markings or patterns for a Ragdoll. Each cat association will have a specific standard for the Ragdoll which further defines what is and is not acceptable for a Ragdoll to be shown in that particular association. For further information, please refer to the links provided below. In reality, Ragdoll kittens are born in a wide and differing variety of the above described patterns, and do not always present EXACTLY as these patterns have been described, but then, that's one more thing that makes Ragdoll pets so endearing!
